Visiting Tutors
Ethelda Ellis Erasmus (Ireland)
Ethelda is offering two workshops, all of which are full. More information about her classes, with images is available on the brochure at the end of this page.
Judi Mendelssohn (UK)
Judi made her first quilt in the early 1970’s, that means she comes to us with over fifty years of sewing experience. It also means she is very old! (Judi said that, not me!) Along the way, she has been a quilt shop owner in South Wales, Joint Editor of (British) Patchwork & Quilting magazine, and has organised and lead many patchwork and quilting tours and retreats with P&Q Tours. She also gives talks and patchwork classes around the UK and abroad and is currently a regional rep for The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles. Honestly, she describes herself as a jack of all patchwork trades and master of none.
Judi’s Workshops
Friday 24th One Day Workshop – Tilting at Windmillls
Triangles, strips and partial (split) piecing make this effective block in an easy
way. These blocks are rotary cut and machine pieced. A requirement list will
be provided prior to the weekend.
Saturday 25th One Day Workshop – Strippy ‘Briads’
Different methods to make different braid designs. The reason for the course
title is because Judi always seems to type it incorrectly and the first time she
taught it someone noticed that all the worksheets said ‘Briads’ and that’s what
they will be called by Judi from now on! You should make enough for a small
cushion or bag in one day. Worksheets for all the braid designs will be provided
to take away with some discussion on their construction.
Sunday 25th One Day Workshop – New York Beauty
A technique learning day making 5 variations of the New York Beauty block.
Incorporates foundation piecing to make the spires and a simple method of
curved piecing to complete the block. Printed foundation papers and patterns
for several blocks are provided for the class.
Joosje Drapers- Whitlau (The Netherlands)
Joosje is Dutch and lives in the east of The Netherlands in an old vicarage. She has been patchwork quilting since the 1990s and has taught patchwork and quilting for over 15 years as a hobby. She has published articles in the magazine of the Dutch Quilter’s Guild. In real life she used to be a company librarian, so, quilt books are her favourite. She is especially fond of hand quilting, scrap quilts and reproduction quilts. Kaffe Fassett is one of Joosje’s favourite quilters. You can follow Joosje on Instagram: joosje1960
Saturday 25th March One Day Workshop – Kawandi
Kawandi is a quilt technique from India and Pakistan made by Siddi people. It is entirely different to the way we quilt: start on the outside and combine quilting and appliqué using a larger stitch and scraps only. All done by hand.
Bring: your scraps (no batiks), loosely woven backing approx 18” x 22”, scissors and pins.
Joosje will supply a kit with marker, thread, needle and wadding for €14.
Sunday 26th March One Day Workshop – Sashiko
Sashiko is a Japanese way of quilting, originally used to repair and reinforce farmers clothing. Usually indigo fabrics and white thread are used because farmers were only allowed to wear blue clothes. The contrast between fabric and thread is important to highlight the beautiful patterns. We will make 4 small blocks using different patterns. Sashiko is time consuming, so regard this workshop as an introduction to this technique. Joosje will supply a complete kit for this project for €20, this includes fabric, ruler, marker, thread etc.
